The day began cloudy and overcast but that didn’t prevent members of the short haul team from practicing their skills with Temsco Helicopters. On the schedule was cargo sling operations. During short haul operations the team is carried under the helicopter with a long line to get to the victim, but much of the equipment is carried in a nylon cargo net. Today’s training concentrated on cargo net operations, assembling loads, and radio communications with the pilot. KVRS has been flying with Temsco since they started operations in 1958. Temsco employs some of the most experienced sling pilots in Alaska, so our crews take every opportunity to train with them to keep our skills sharp.

The Memorial Day Weekendkicks off the 64th annual CHARR King Salmon Derby. This is a major fundraising event for the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, who mans the Mountain Point Weight Station. This is a great community event with hundreds of participant’s fishing for the top prize of over $10,000.00
- The first derby weekend starts Saturday May 28th at 7:00 am and continues until Monday evening May 30th at 9:00 pm.
- The second derby weekend starts Saturday June 4th at 7:00 am and continues until Sunday evening June 5th at 9:00 pm.
- The third derby weekend starts Saturday June 11th at 7:00 am and continues until Sunday evening June 12th at 9:00 pm.

Salmon Derby Fund Raiser - Volunteers are needed to man the Mountain Point Derby Station. This years derby will run on May 28, 29, 30, June 4, 5, and June 11, 12. This is a great program and one of the largest fundraisers we have. It is a lot of work but is a great community event, and a lot of fun. Contact Eric Muench for information and sign up.

Annual KVRS Garage Sale will be held May 14th and 15th, proceeds from the sale will be used for the installation of the kitchenette at the communications center. The sale will start at 0800 each morning, this will be the largest sale we have had in recent history
